The Centrum is the cradle of the city. In the thirteenth century fishermen built a dam in the river Amstel; the settlement of 'Amstelredamme' grew into the Amsterdam of today. Dam Square still sits on that historic spot.
Around the Oude Kerk (the oldest building in the city) and the medieval alleys, centuries of history unfold. Merchant houses, churches and monuments from the Golden Age make the old town an open-air museum where past and present naturally come together.
