Living and working at the city's edge
Oud-West rose in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Amsterdam grew quickly and needed densely built working-class neighbourhoods just outside the old ring. The Kinkerbuurt, Da Costabuurt and Helmersbuurt all date from that period.
The industrial past is still clearly visible: the Foodhallen occupy a former tram depot from 1902. The name Oud-West sets the neighbourhood apart from the later Nieuw-West, and with Vondelpark around the corner the area combines urban buzz with greenery and space.
