Amsterdam's people's quarter
The Jordaan was laid out around 1612, in the same city expansion as the canal ring, but as a place to live and work for craftsmen, labourers and immigrants. Many streets and canals were given the names of flowers and plants, such as the Bloemgracht and the Rozengracht.
According to the best-known explanation, the name derives from the French 'jardin' (garden), after the French Huguenots who sought refuge here. The neighbourhood produced a folk culture of its own, with the levenslied and its characteristic hofjes, and is still regarded as one of the most quintessentially Amsterdam neighbourhoods.
