History

From working-class district to lively heart

De Pijp was built at speed from the 1870s onward as a working-class district, with long, straight, narrow streets. Several stories surround the origin of its name (Dutch for 'the pipe'): from the long, narrow drawer-like homes to the dead-straight streets that recall the stem of a pipe.

The neighbourhood always drew students, artists and, later, newcomers from around the world. The painter Piet Mondriaan lived and worked here. The Albert Cuypmarkt, Europe's largest daily market since 1905, and Sarphatipark, named after the city reformer Samuel Sarphati, make De Pijp one of the most colourful neighbourhoods in the city.
