The city expands southward
Oud-Zuid emerged in the final decades of the nineteenth century, as Amsterdam sought space beyond the canal ring. Wide, leafy avenues and stately town houses gave the neighbourhood its distinguished character.
The prefix 'Oud' (old) sets it apart from the later Plan Zuid, designed by architect H.P. Berlage just to the south. The arrival of the Rijksmuseum (1885), the Concertgebouw (1888) and Vondelpark (named after the poet Joost van den Vondel) made Oud-Zuid the cultural heart of the city.
